This art reference document and study guide follows the line of
American artists who did not break away along with the Post-
Impressionists and most modern art. It follows the work taught at
the Art Academies, as well as those artists who made slight
variations on those themes as the decades proceeded. Separate
documents were made for the art in these countries:

The Hudson River School—American Landscape Painting
The Hudson River School included Thomas Cole (its founder), Frederic
Church, Jasper Cropsey, Asher Durand, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran,
George Inness, Robert Duncanson, and others. All were 19th century
American landscape painters. The works of all of these are in the
collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and can be seen there in

the American countryside, and made landscapes an important feature of
the American art world.
