French Realism Art

French Realism Art

This art reference document and study guide follows the line of French
artists who did not break
away along with the Post- Impressionists and most modern art.  It
begins with an understanding of the Neoclassical and the Romantic
movements.  It  follows the work taught at the Art Academies and those
artists who made slight variation on those themes as the decades
proceeded.

The French Painters of the Academy

Academic art, or Academicism, is a style of painting and sculpture
produced under the influence of European academies of art.
Specifically, academic art is the art and artists influenced by the
standards of the French Académie des Beaux-Arts, which practiced under
the movements of Neoclassicism and Romanticism, and the art that
followed these two movements in the attempt to synthesize both of
their styles, and which is best reflected by the paintings of
William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Thomas Couture, and Hans Makart.

Paul Delaroche (1797 –  1856) was a French  painter.  He evidenced an

David).  Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of  Delaroche’s  better known
students.

French Landscape Artists  and the Barbizon School

In 1824, the Salon de Paris exhibited works of John Constable, an
English landscape painter.  This influenced some young French painters
to devote their career to landscape work.  They met in Barbizon near
the Fontainebleau Forest  in France to discuss their ideas.  The
Barbizon School included Théodore Rousseau, Charles-François Daubigny,
Constant Troyon, and the French Realist painters Camille Corot,
Jean-François Millet, and Jules Dupré .

Théodore Rousseau (1812 –  1867) was a French painter of the Barbizon school.

Charles-François Daubigny  (1817 –  1878) was one of the painters of
the Barbizon school, and is considered an important precursor of
Impressionism.  Initially Daubigny painted in a traditional style, but
this changed after 1843 when he settled in Barbizon to work outside in
nature. Even more important was his meeting with Camille Corot.

Constant Troyon (1810 –  1865) was a French painter of the Barbizon
school. In the early part of his career he painted mostly landscapes.
It was only comparatively late in life that Troyon found his métier as
a painter of animals, and achieved international recognition.
