English Realism Art
English Realism ArtThis art reference document and study guide follows the line ofEnglish artists who did not breakaway along with the Post- Impressionists and most modern art. Itbegins with an understanding of the Neoclassical and the Romanticmovements. It follows the work taught at the Art Academies, as wellas those who made slight variations on those themes as the decadesproceeded. In the 18th century, English painting developed a distinct style andtradition. The English School of Painting, a dominant school ofpainting in England, was active from 1750–1850. After this thePre-Raphaelites dominated English painting for much of the remainderof the 19th century. The late Victorian and the Classicist paintersdeveloped in the 1890s, and they continued strong until about 1920.=============================================================The Formation of the Royal Academy in the 18th Century.William Hogarth (1697-1764) English painter and also did satire caricatures. Sir Thomas Lawrence was one of the English artists who picked up after Gainsborough and Reynolds. His work certainly seems like a continuation of these two giants of the Royal Academy. On the continent, Lawrence would be considered an Academy artist, or an Academic. The painting by Lawrence called "Pinkie" has worked as a match to Gainsborough's "Blue Boy." Both the "Blue Boy" and "Pinkie" are part of the Huntington Collection in California, and the paintings face each other. Lawrence presented Pinkie in 1794, two years after the death of Joshua Reynolds. After Thomas Lawrence came William Etty and William Collins, bothRoyal Academy artists. Usually a discussion of English painting ofthis period would include the work of Constable and Turner.Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). English painter. They were Royal Academy students who felt the Academy style spent too much effort "looking backward," and these new painters preferred genre paintings. They were reacting against a "rules-bound" formalism that was the style of the Royal Academy. Richard Dadd was the main thinker of this effort. Yet what happened is that he fell into mental illness, and his own style of painting changed. Today, he is most appreciated for the work he did after the onset of the mental illness. The Clique was disdainful of the Pre-Raphaelite painters who cameafter them; even though the Pre-Raphaelites also wished to breakfrom the style of the Royal Academy.Richard Dadd (1817-1886), English painter.
